Home-insurance renewal checklist: compare the policy, not the premium

A practical way to align rebuild value, contents, excesses, exclusions and declared home improvements.

Update the property record

Tell the insurer about material changes such as extensions, solar panels, major renovation, business use, occupancy or high-value possessions where the questions or policy require it. Retain the statement of facts and correct errors promptly.

Buildings cover relates to rebuilding rather than market value. Leaseholders should confirm what the freeholder policy covers before duplicating or leaving gaps.

Make limits comparable

Set the same contents value, voluntary excess and optional cover across quotes. Then compare compulsory excesses, single-item limits, bicycles, possessions away from home, matching sets and alternative accommodation.

A bundle that includes home emergency or legal cover is valuable only if the limits and exclusions match a real need. Check whether similar protection already exists elsewhere.

Read the likely dispute points

Financial Ombudsman material shows disputes around gradual damage, storm definitions, subsidence, underinsurance, unoccupied homes, settlement delays and repair quality. Read those sections before a claim—not after one.

Save the policy wording and IPID for the exact policy year. At renewal, compare the new document as well as price because terms, limits and excesses can change.
