Cooling need is growing, but it is not uniform
The Climate Change Committee’s 2026 adaptation assessment identifies better cooling as one of the critical priorities for protecting the UK from heat. Its central message is not that every household needs the same appliance; it is that buildings, public services and infrastructure need practical plans for more frequent and severe heat.
A shaded ground-floor room in northern Britain may have very different needs from a top-floor London flat with one exposed façade. Age, health, night-time temperatures, ability to open windows securely and time spent at home can matter as much as the regional forecast.
Some homes are much harder to cool passively
Single-aspect flats, homes with large unshaded glazing, top-floor rooms and properties affected by noise, pollution or security constraints can have limited opportunities for cross-ventilation. Modern insulation helps retain winter heat but must be paired with a usable summer overheating strategy.
England’s Approved Document O now sets overheating mitigation requirements for new residential buildings. Government guidance says practicable passive measures for limiting solar gains and removing excess heat should be incorporated before mechanical cooling is relied upon. Existing homes are more varied and need a property-specific approach.
Air conditioning is one layer of a heat plan
External shutters, awnings, solar-control measures, trees and other shading can stop heat before it enters. Internal blinds help but the sunlight has already passed through the glass. Safe purge ventilation when outdoor air becomes cooler can remove stored heat; during hotter parts of the day, opening windows may instead admit warmer air.
Fans can improve comfort by increasing air movement, but they do not reduce room air temperature. Refrigeration-based air conditioners can lower temperature and humidity, but portable models must exhaust heat outdoors and split systems require an appropriate outdoor unit, qualified installation and any necessary property permissions.
Decide before the emergency purchase
Measure the room, identify a safe exhaust or outdoor-unit position and estimate the capacity range before a heat alert. For a portable unit, check window type, hose limits, drainage, storage and indoor noise. For a split system, obtain a heat-load survey, an itemised quotation and written confirmation of responsibilities for planning, landlord or freeholder consent.
Use verified electrical input to model running costs at your own tariff. A larger cooling-capacity number is not automatically better, and a low purchase price can be poor value if the unit is unsuitable for the room or cannot be vented correctly.

Account for heat gains
Direct sun, roof exposure, cooking, computers, multiple occupants and poor insulation all add heat. Large west-facing windows can matter more in late afternoon than the room's floor area suggests. Conversely, external shading and good insulation can reduce demand. A useful estimate therefore adjusts a baseline range and explains each adjustment instead of hiding the assumptions behind a single confident-looking number.
Open-plan areas deserve particular care because cooled air can move into halls, stairwells or adjoining rooms. Portable equipment is normally intended for one enclosed room. Understand running-cost estimates
For a transparent maximum-input scenario, divide watts by 1,000, multiply by hours used and then multiply by the electricity unit rate in pounds per kWh. The standing charge is normally already payable for the supply and is not added again to the marginal appliance calculation.
A compressor can cycle after the target temperature is reached, so actual consumption may be below a calculation based on continuous rated input. Weather, set point, insulation, equipment control and heat entering the room affect that duty cycle. Compare noise consistently
Portable air conditioners keep the compressor and fans inside the room, so their character of sound differs from a split system whose compressor is outdoors. Published decibel figures can refer to different operating modes and test conditions. Compare the stated minimum with minimum and maximum with maximum, and do not interpret a sleep-mode label as a promise of silence.
For bedrooms, consider compressor starts, airflow, vibration and rattling from a window panel as well as the headline number. A firm level floor and correctly fitted exhaust arrangement can prevent avoidable vibration. For split systems, the outdoor unit's position matters to neighbours and nearby windows; an installer survey should address both sound and vibration transmission.
Check installation and ventilation
A genuine compressor portable air conditioner must reject heat outside, normally through a hose and suitable window kit. Keep within the manufacturer's permitted hose length and bend limits, close gaps around the panel and preserve security and escape routes. Exhausting into a loft, wall cavity or another occupied room simply moves heat and can create other risks.
Split equipment involves fixed indoor and outdoor units, drainage, electrical work and refrigerant pipework. Refrigerant work covered by the UK F-gas rules must be carried out by appropriately qualified people. Do not open or modify a refrigerant circuit. Ask an installer to identify the exact models, pipe route, electrical provision, drainage method, commissioning work and responsibility for permissions.
Read specifications with care
Model numbers matter because retailers sometimes group several capacities or revisions on one page. Confirm that the model number, image and technical table describe the same product. Record the manufacturer or retailer source URL and verification date. Where two sources disagree, prefer a dated manufacturer manual or energy label and keep the conflict visible until it is resolved.
Dimensions should include the space needed for airflow, hose bends and access, not only the cabinet footprint. Weight matters if a portable unit must cross thresholds or stairs; small castors do not make every unit easy to move. Also check drainage instructions, supplied window parts, plug and cable requirements, filter access and the warranty terms that apply in the UK.
Compare prices without false urgency

Another common mistake is to ignore the exhaust or outdoor-unit location until after purchase. Plan where heat will go, how condensate will be managed and whether doors and windows can remain secure. Check landlord, freeholder, planning and building constraints where relevant. A few minutes spent on these practicalities prevents many expensive mismatches.
